Jul 21, 2007 · I've shot both round ball (.454) and conicals out of my Pietta Remmy, I use a 30 grain charge of 777, a wonder wad (for the round balls) and the projectile, with either bullet I can shoot pretty much into one large jagged hole at POA at 15 yards, at 25-30 yards that conical is slightly more accurate but not enough to prefer one type over the other.
This is generally true for all military black powder arms, but especially true for revolvers. You will probably find, for example, that most .44 revolvers, like the Colt 1860 or the Remington New Model Army (1858) develop best accuracy around 18-20 grains of 3F powder. Their service charges were typically 30 grains or so.
The cap and ball Remington 1858. The cap and ball loading method is one of the first practical methods of loading a revolver. Samuel Colt created the first practical percussion cap revolver in 1836. With a muzzleloader you need to know where your ball impacts at different ranges- 20 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards etc. so you can change your point of aim to hit the target.
