Okay today i flushed my power steering fluid. With the help of jpdocdave I changed my transmission oil hoping it would fix the problem I was having getting into gears and out.
Apr 16, 2013 · Power steering fluid isn't the worst thing you could put in there, but Dex/Merc ATF is correct (I believe it calls for Dexron III). I have flushed my power steering system a different way. This was on an older car with the reservoir on the pump...I used about a 2' piece of 1/2" hose.
Jan 08, 2018 · Over time, especially if you haven't renewed your fluid on a regular basis, the fine mesh filter on the bottom of the power steering reservoir can become blocked up with black gunk and starve your steering rack of fluid. Cleaning the filter screen ensures a good flow of fluid to your steering rack and puts less strain on the pump.

The reason that the air in the lines causes a problem is that the air foams up the oil, and this causes its volume to expand. And when an air bubble gets to the reservoir, if the volume of it and the liquid in the reservoir is larger than the reservoir, oil and air come out the filler cap.
When reservoir fill line drops at or below the top surface of internal filter, stop turning the steering wheel. Refill reservoir, then proceed to turn steering wheel to pump out old fluid, repeat. Stop when new fluid has circulated throughout system. Plug back the return line back into reservoir. Refill reservoir to proper fill level. Turn on car, allow p/s pump to circulate fluid, check level. Turn steering wheel end to end. Recheck level.

What kind of power steering fluid are you guys using/recommend? I was going to buy some of this stuff, anyone have any experience with it? Just did the hoses to the reservoir so now I REALLY need to figure out what kind of fluid I need.

  • May 12, 2007 · No you don't have to get the old fluid out and just fill it till the "dipstick" on the resevoir, reads max then do about 10-15 full turns holding it for about 5 seconds at the end of each half turn (all the way to the left then all the way to the right is 1 turn) and it should get all of the air out of the lines, then after that you will probably need to fill the resevior a little bit more.

  • Remove the power steering reservoir cap and check the power steering fluid level. Add as much fluid as needed to fill it up. Close the bleed valve. Add power steering fluid to the reservoir until it's full. Check the fluid that came out into the drain pan. If you notice air bubbles, repeat the procedure.
